Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) in the US have been having a hard time lately. In July last year, Amp'd Wireless hit bankruptcy. Disney Mobile closed down. And this weekend news is arising of Voce Wireless, a "premium" MVNO based on AT&T's cellular network not just closing down, but dying abruptly and without warning.
Voce offers, or offered, customers with a virtual phone network service, by purchasing millions of AT&T minutes, much like Virgin Mobile. Voce, however, only sold premium handsets such as LG's KE850 Prada, the Nokia N95, and the Nokia Luna. They also provided a free concierge service and unlimited SMS messages, all for US$118 a month.
When carriers hit rock bottom, it is well known that they notify their customers, make known a service cutoff date, credit unused minutes and sometimes even organise a new carrier for the thousands left without service. However, at 11am on February 1st, Voce customers found themselves with no service, and no explanation.
A class action lawsuit should get underway soon - but all we want is some clear details from Voce's management.
